About Us


We're part of the Understanding Recruitment family, an award-winning technology, software & digital recruitment consultancy.

After recognising the challenges faced by Not-For-Profit organisations when hiring Digital, Data and Technology talent we launched our Not-for-Profit (NFP) division in 2012. Since then we have built a team of experienced specialist consultants, dedicated to working with clients and candidates alike to help them fulfil their ambitions.

Added Fundraising

​In 2020 we established our Fundraising team that partners with UK and international charities of all sizes and causes to find the best high value fundraising talent.

First Decade in Business

​2018 was a busy year for us! We celebrated our first decade in business, reached 50 employees and we won ‘Best Staffing Firm to Work for UK’ at the Staffing Industry Analysts SIA Awards for the 3rd consecutive year.

Won Business of the Year

​The team completed the Coast to Coast Challenge raising over £3k for Cancer Research. We also won ‘Best Staffing Firm to Work For’ Award at the Annual Staffing Analysts Executive Forum and ‘Business of the Year’ at the SME Hertfordshire Business Awards.

Won Employer of the Year

​The team completed the Nuclear Races in aid of the Niemann-Pick Disease Group, MacMillan Cancer Support, Willow, and the Great Ormond Street Hospital. We won multiple awards ranging from ‘Recruitment Company of the Year’ at the APSCo Awards for Excellence, to ‘Best Staffing Firm to Work For’ at the Staffing Industry Analysts’ (SIA) Executive Forum.

Winners Trip to Miami

In 2015 we took our best performing consultants on an unforgettable trip to Miami! We also won at the Hertfordshire Business Awards and were highly commended for the ‘Investing in Talent Award’ at the Recruiter Awards.

Won APSCo award for 'Innovator of the Year'

​We were awarded the APSCo Award for ‘Innovator of the Year’ and won‘Best Candidate Experience Award’ at the Recruitment Business Awards. Our Head of Data & Digital Tom Rankin, who joined us as an Apprentice, won ‘Best Newcomer of the Year’ at the IRP Awards. ​The team also took part in the Herts 10k run raising funds for the Rennie Grove Hospice.

New Office

​In 2013, we expanded our team and moved to new offices in The Maltings, St. Albans. We also launched Net Promoter Score which later won ‘Innovator of the Year’ at the APSCo awards. The team took part in the Herts 10k run to raise funds for the Grove House Charity and Miles Hunt joined as Non-Executive Director.

Launched NFP Team

We launched our Not for Profit (NFP) division in 2012 after recognising the challenges faced by the sector when hiring Digital, Data and Technology talent.   

Celebrating 10 Employees

In 2009 our team grew to ten employees! To get more space, we moved into a new office in Lower Dagnall Street in St. Albans.

First Office

​In 2008, Rugby legend Richard Hill opened our first office in The Regus Office Space, St. Albans.

Understanding Recruitment Founded

Understanding Recruitment was founded by Chris Jackson & Dale Swords in St. Albans, Hertfordshire. We also celebrated placing our first candidate this year!
